Smile Lines

Nasolabial folds are the creases that form a diagonal line from the bottom half of the nose to the edges of the mouth. They are also referred to as smile lines. Smile lines divide the cheeks from the nose and mouth. Nasolabial folds resemble a set of parentheses. They are not caused by smiling, but by the normal aging process. Smile lines can make people look older than they are.
A variety of factors can lead to the formation of nasolabial folds. The loss of collagen and elastin cause the skin to lose elasticity. When the skin doesn’t have enough collagen and elastin, it doesn’t regain its shape as quickly after an expression is made. Frequent smiling, therefore, can contribute to, but not cause, smile lines. Hyaluronic acid is another natural substance in the body that gives skins its full appearance. Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays also contributes to the aging of the skin.
Hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin loss are all natural parts of aging. Unfortunately, they can make the facial skin of otherwise vibrant, healthy people look old and tired. There is not a natural way to restore elasticity to the skin and cosmetic creams are not always effective at slowing the signs of aging.
Many people find the first signs of aging to be unsettling. Although smile lines are often the first lines that appear on the face, people in their 30s and 40s know they are a sign of more to come. Traditional facelifts are often ineffective at erasing smile lines. Fortunately, with the FDA-approval of derma fillers, people no longer have to look older than their years.
