Aging Hands

Aging not only affects the skin on the face, but the hands as well. They may even begin showing signs of age before the face. The skin on the back of the hand is much thinner than the face, and contains far less fat. As the skin’s natural collagen and elastin fibers begin to break down, the hands start to show noticeable signs age. Textures may change and veins may begin to grow larger and bulge. Wrinkles and thin, translucent skin are also signs of aging hands.

Sun exposure also causes aging, often prematurely. Red or brown spots, known as age spots or liver spots, may develop. This is because the sun stimulates the cells that produce pigment, resulting in overproduction. Avoid sunlight directly on the hands, and wear protective clothing whenever possible. Try to keep the hands away from the windows while driving. Harmful rays can penetrate glass, and may even amplify the damaging effects. When applying sunscreen, be sure to cover the entire hand, including the back.

Many people neglect to care for their hands properly. Exposure to the sun, chemicals, and dryness are damaging. Occasionally applying lotion is not be enough to fight the signs of aging. Be sure to wear sunscreen when outside and wear gloves when handling chemicals and cleaners. Exfoliating the hands once a week will remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new ones. Since the skin on the hands is so thin, keeping them moisturized is very important.

Many of the treatments used in-office for the face and neck are also available for treating aging hands. Filler injections give the skin a plump look and soften wrinkles. Pigmented and discolored spots can be removed or lightened using a very light burning called electrodessication. Laser treatments are also available. These encourage the skin to increase natural production of collagen and elastin. Dr. Zizmor will develop a personalized regimen to treat your aging hands.
